The Massena girls varsity lacrosse squadron reclaimed the Section 10 title but were ousted from state play two nights later.

On Tuesday, May 31, Massena won their title bout against Canton 10-8 at Potsdam High School.

Canton leapt onto the scoreboard first, with a goal from Sam Mace 2:06 into the competition.

Massena took nearly 10 minutes to get on the board, with their first from Abby LaClair at 9:23. Cayla Hinkley followed up just over a minute later. Less than two minutes after that goal, Canton tied the game thanks to Marguerite Smith.

With 9:09 left in the first half, Krysten Stone punched in a goal unassisted to give Massena a 3-2 lead, followed by another from her squadmate Devin Kelly with 7:32 left in the frame.

Angelina Vecchio responded with just under five minutes in the half. Raechel Davis then fired in a goal with 33 seconds to the buzzer, bringing Massena to a 6-3 lead.

After building to a 9-5 lead toward the end of the game, Canton scored three of the last four goals to leave the final tally at 10-8.

Hinkley and Kelly scored two goals and assisted one play each. Stone scored once and assisted twice.

Mace and Delaney Hayes led Canton shooters with two goals apiece.

Two nights later, Massena's 2016 season came to a close.

Section Four champs Vestal gave the girls a run for their money with a 17-6 win.

Vestal sprinted to a 10-1 lead at the half and pulled ahead 17-2 before Massena fired in four straight goals, the last of the game.

Massena's LaClair scored twice. Kelly, Raechel Davis, Abigail Johnson and Kyrsten Stone each scored solo goals. Gisele Todd turned aside 12 scoring attempts.

Amanda Fedor led Vestal with four goals and three assists. Noelle Patterson scored six times and assisted one play. Nicole Laska and Emily Brennan split goaltender detail for a combined 12 saves.

Boy's Lacrosse

Massena's varsity boys lacrosse season ended Wednesday, June 1 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

They fell to Section 3 champions Jamesville-Dewitt by a final score of 20-4.

Massena goals came from Kendrick Angus, Kyran Sunday, Kainen Francis-Thompson and Nick Henrie.

J-D opened the game with three quick goals, followed by Massena shooters reducing the deficit to 3-2.

J-D then scored 10 goals to Massena's one, leaving the scoreboard at 13-3 going into the first half.

Going into the second half, J-D pulled ahead 15-3. Massena's Ryan Archer attempted to narrow the gap with three straight goals, the team's last.

Softball

Massena will represent Section 10 in the state Class A varsity softball playoffs.

They bested Malone 10-4 on Tuesday, May 31 at SUNY Potsdam to take the title.

It was Coach Susan Macaulay's first sectional crown.

Amber Thomas earned the win pitching in relief of starter Raeghan Peets. Malone's Kayla King was credited the loss. Abigail Collins relieved her in the sixth inning.

This is the first year since 2010 that Malone have not been the Section 10 champions.

Massena's win came on the heels of two four-run rallies and taking advantage of eight hits and nine errors from their opponents.
