Canada Census, Minnows and Shoreline Project Discussed

 


The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 in the village of Kanatakon at the Kononhkwa’tsheri:io Atrium.

Canada Census gave their third presentation to the community, Council stated the ongoing online survey is being completed by the community for input on whether to take part on Statistics Canada’s Census or not. If approved by the community, canvassers will begin visiting homes in late April and the survey would be expected to be completed by the end of May 2016. Minnows and Shoreline Project – Abraham Francis gave a presentation on the Minnows and Shoreline Project. He gave a detailed explanation and need for minnows and how the project will help ensure not only their survival as a species but to flourish as well. Minnows play an invaluable role in the food chain and explained how community members play an important role in their survival. Mr. Francis will present the community with future updates on their research and planned proposals of the protection of this species. He also stated the historical and cultural significance of the fish and water life and how he will be working closely with Elders, local fishing men, and others to gather important in formation in regards to minnows and their survival and restoration as a species.

New Business from the Floor – The Police Commission is looking to fill a position, two have already been filled after all three Police Commissioners were released of their duties. New members will be reviewing their Charter and resolutions. Questions were raised on land ownership and the role Aboriginal Affairs must remain responsible for many of the land disputes in Akwesasne.

Questions were raised on improving financial support for community members pursing an advanced degree.

The next MCA General Meeting will be held on April 28, 2016 in Tsi Snaihne starting at 6:00pm. The district meeting for Kawehnoke and Tsi Snaihne will be held on April 11, the village of Kana:takon on April 18. All district meetings start at 6:00pm.
