ALICE M. IVANY

AKWESASNE – After a lengthy illness, Mrs. Alice M. Ivany, 69, of 20 Johnson Road, passed away Tuesday evening, August 4, 2015 at Ottawa General Hospital, with her husband by her side. She had been under the loving and compassionate care of the Mohawk Council Home Care Support, which allowed her to remain at her home during her illness.

Alice was born January 8, 1946 in Syracuse, the daughter of the late Elizabeth "Bessie" Day and was raised by her mother and stepfather the late Thomas Lazare. She attended schools in St. Regis, Quebec, St. Andrew's, Ontario and at St. Patrick's in Ottawa. She later graduated from St. Lawrence College in Cornwall. On July 7, 1989, she married Kevin W. Ivany in Fort Covington with Justice Jerome Brockway officiating. A previous marriage to Sidney Armstrong ended in divorce.

Alice once worked as an accountant for the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe before becoming a social worker with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, where she continued until her retirement. She cherished the precious memories and times she shared visiting and shopping with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed going to the casino.

Along with her husband, Kevin, she is survived by her children, Eric Armstrong and his companion, Debbie Francis of Snye; Dennis and Katrina Armstrong of Akwesasne; Sean and Leanne Armstrong of Akwesasne; and Laura Armstrong of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Heather, Courtney, Nolan, Erin, Katie, Quinn, Taylor, Tyler, Taylin, Cydni, and Kaetlyn; her great grandchildren, Kloey, Noah, and Reed; her sister, Vicki Thompson and Ron Montroy of Cornwall; and her brother, Darryl "Kermit" and Sherril Lazare of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her mother and step-father, Alice was predeceased by a chosen brother, Harold Jacobs on July 7, 1979; and a nephew, Devin Burns on September 8, 2006.

Friends called at the home of her brother, Darryl "Kermit" Lazare. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday at St. Regis Catholic Church. Cremation followed.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing may consider the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance Service.

Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where memories and condolences may be shared online at http://www.donaldsonfh.com.
