TRANSFERRING A DRIVER'S LICENSE TO QUEBEC

 


TERRITORY OF AKWESASNE - The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to inform the community that if they want to transfer a current, valid driver’s license from another province, state or country to a Québec license, there are several requirements and steps that must be made before the process can be completed.

The following steps/conditions are required prior to the process of exchanging a driver’s license to Quebec:

Step 1: Make an Appointment

Prior to exchanging your license, you must make an appointment with Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). If you do not establish a meeting with them, you will NOT be able to exchange your driver’s license.

Step 2: General Conditions for Driver’s License Exchange Conditions

If you want to exchange your driver’s license, you must meet the following requirements:

•be at least age 16;

•hold a valid driver’s license; the class shown on your license must be correspond to the type of vehicle you want to be driving in Québec. Go to the section on Québec driver’s license classes to find out;

•be a Québec resident;

•be authorized to stay in Canada if not a Canadian citizen;

•pass any test required (no test if your license was issued in Canada);

•pay the prescribed fees.

In order to exchange your driver’s license, you must provide the following documents:

•your current valid driver’s license to be exchanged

•proof that you were a resident of the jurisdiction which issued the license you wish to exchange (i.e. Mail that is addressed to you which matches your valid driver’s license which you want to be exchanged).

•Driver abstract from that jurisdiction

·proof that you were born in Canada or are a Canadian citizen (the birth certificate issued by the Directeur de l’état civil (registrar of civil status) or the Canadian equivalent;

·for persons born in Ontario, only the original birth certificate will be accepted. The certified copy of birth registration will not be accepted). If not, a document from immigration authorities showing that you are authorized to stay in Canada;

·Proof of residency/address in Québec; for the new license (eg: Bell, Hydro Québec, bank statement, Revenue Quebec, house or car insurance bill)

•Native Status Card

•Residency letter from Mohawk Council of Akwesasne

•Marriage Certificate (if married name differs from Maiden name)

When you attend the appointment, please ensure that you have the required official documents with you.
