The rain didn't stop the dedicated golfers at the 5th annual Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club "Be Great" Golf Tournament held on Saturday, August 26, 2014. Cedar View Golf course was still bustling with golfers helping to fundraise for ABGC. At the clubhouse, golfers were served a delicious meal after they came in from the fall-like day.

There were several great items in the silent auction and the 50/50 was an incredible $1,200 and may have gone even higher!

ABGC Executive Director Jessica Cree-Jock said about 70 golfers came out for the event. Prior to the tournament, $23,500 was raised from corporate sponsors.

Before the awards and drawings, Cree-Jock gave everyone an update on the club saying, "It was a huge expanding year for us, we maxed out at 125 children." She also announced that over the next few years they hope to expand even more and be in a new building.

The "Be Great" Golf Tournament could not have been possible without the following sponsors.

Akwesasne Convenience Store Association, Akwesasne Community Partnership Fund, Akwesasne Mohawk Casino Resort, Key Bank, CKON, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, First Niagara, Donaldson Funeral Home, Bears Den, Akwesasne Housing Authority, J&J Insurance, Fasprint, Jrecks Subs, Traditional Lacrosse, Twinleaf, Beardsley and Truckstop #9.

Silent Auction sponsors were Julia Back-Skidders, PJ Herne, Micaelee Horn, Dale White, Rob White, Mohawk Vision, Chocolate Chicks, Theresa Cole, Akwesasne Mini Mart, Swamps Plumbing, T19, Akwesasne Sports, Nature's Gifts, Kaly White, Cedar View, Seaway Academy of Martial Arts and Colleen Farwell.

Be Great is an initiative adopted by the Boys and Girls Club of America, and consists of a graduation oriented program that follows the children through school.

Next year's tournament will likely change in some respects, as the ABGC is nearly at full capacity, they will need a new facility sooner rather than later. The program now serves 106 kids on a regular basis out of a max of 110 that the building can support. There are also 381 registered members, not all of whom come every day. So as the needs of the ABGC have grown, so must their home, and next year's tournament may help to fund that transition.
