Kanatakon School Powwow 2014

On Friday June 6th, the Kanatakon School held a their annual Powwow in the gym.

Aboriginal Experience, from Ottawa, came again this year and gave the kids powwow dancing lessons. Each member focused on different dances such as male and female traditional, grass dance, jingle and fancy shawl. Lance Delisle was MC and Bear Nation, from Golden Lake, Ont., was the drum group. They did the Flag Song and Veterans song and there was also a round dance and a couple inter-tribals.

The event is held to promote heritage, culture and self-esteem said Principal Alice King. She added, "I'm hoping to go to the arena and see more of our kids dancing."

The powwow is made possible by grants from the Enbridge Corporation.

There was also a Mohawk Auction in the lobby with several themed baskets to be won. Each class put together a basket to raise money to buy a projection screen for the gym.
