On Monday June 9th the Heart and Stroke Foundation held its Big Bike Event at the St. Regis Recreation.

On Monday June 9th, the Heart and Stroke Foundation held their Big Bike Event in Akwesasne. This is the sixth year they have put on the event. A full bike, with riders carrying noise-makers, left the St. Regis Recreation and made a trip through St. Regis at about 3:30pm. There were three teams; AMBE, AMPS and Kanonhkwatsheri:io, and their team captains were Lisa Francis-Benedict, Cynthia Lord and Lorrie Caldwell. Lynne Groulx, Program Coordinator for the Heart and Stroke Foundation said, "The captains have a huge role in whatever money is raised today. We get a lot of support from this community."

The event is put on to raise funds to purchase and install defibrillators, or AEDs, in buildings around the community. Lynne said that AMS, Snye and Kanatakon Schools all have defibrillators from money partially raised when the schools participated in Jump Rope for Heart. Lynne said, "We know they save lives. The have saved 53 lives provincially and two locally."

If you missed this year's event, the Big Bike will be back next spring. They can do several rides so the more people the merrier!
