A Voice from the Eastern Door

Caroling Cops Bring Holiday Cheer to Elders

On Tuesday December 10th, members of several police agencies travelled to Iakhihsohtha to sing Christmas carols to Elders. Members of Tribal Police, AMPS, RCMP, OPP and some retired officials from these agencies, brought their singing voices, along with Santa Claus and the RCMP Safety Bear.

They sang a number of songs like "Winter Wonderland," "Silver Bells," "Away in a Manger" and many more. Residents and staff were singing along, and the RCMP Safety Bear was a favorite to dance with.

But there was cheer spread from more than singing. In between songs, the crowd yelled, "Joke!" and an officer busted out his list of jokes and the crowd roared with laughter. Residents were also treated to gifts from the caroling cops.

Retired RCMP Officer Richard Duval started this tradition almost 15 years ago and since then it has expanded to involve several agencies and they make several stops. Earlier in the morning before stopping at Iakhihsohtha, they stopped at Tsiionkwanonhsote.
