On Thursday, April 25, 2013 the Tsi Snaihne gym was full of young women learning some serious self-defense tactics. Three guest instructors from the Freedom Taekwon-Do Health and Fitness of Cornwall, Ontario: Betty Anne Villeneuve, and Apryl and Laine Larkin instructed approximately 12 young women and two young men on how to defend themselves when attacked. This event, along with several others was organized and hosted by the MCA’s Akwesasne Justice Program.

Brett “The Hitman” Hart playing the role of attacker by grabbing Alicia Francis’ wrist. She did set herself free of his grasp.

Brett “The Hitman” Hart was there and he had many of his own techniques to share. However, the role of an attacker is different than the role of an opponent and the techniques used to fight off an attacker differ. Nine times out of ten the attacker is someone you know. The main goal is to use your first and strongest defense – your brain, and to think your way out of situation. The second defense is to use your attacker’s weakest areas to your advantage and to use your strongest parts of your body for your defense. Your elbow can be more devastating than a punch to the face. Your legs and feet are also parts of your body that can be used in defense. Where a man’s upper body strength is no match for most women, a woman’s torso is her main defense in freeing herself. If you look at the series of photos, a woman can free and release herself from an attacker when pinned down by learning three simple moves.

The class was very informative and immediately useful. In just over an hour the class gave a newfound sense of security to these young women and men. The instructors covered the basics if you were attacked from behind, if someone choked you and if the attacker pinned you down. The Freedom Taekwon-Do Health and Fitness is located on 200 Hoople Ave in Cornwall, Ontario. They also run an eight-week summer camp for children and a “Women’s Self Defense Taught by Mothers for Daughters” class. They can be reached at 613 936 2443 or at freedomtkdcornwall.com.
