Applications Being Accepted For Secure ID Card

AKWESASNE MOHAWK TERRITORY – The Department of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada is now accepting applications for the Secure Certificate of Indian Status for the purpose of border crossing. The secure status card is a Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative-compliant document and can be used to enter the U.S. by land or water. Individuals will need to schedule an appointment to complete an application, as well as present a current Certificate of Indian Status and an original birth certificate issued by a Canadian province or territory, or a state in the United States. In addition, individuals must provide two forms of government-issued identification: such as a driver’s license or passport. There are additional requirements for individuals under the age 15.

For more information on required documents, as well as to make an appointment to apply for a border-crossing Secure Certificate of Indian Status, individuals can call Toll Free 1-877-710-2908 between the hours of 8 am and 4 pm. Applications will be taken in-person at the Indian and Northern Affairs Office located at 15 Eddy Street in Hull, Quebec.
