The Story of Kateri Tekakwitha (1656- 1680)

 

Aside from being the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne Grand Chief, Mike Kanentakeron Mitchell is a faithkeeper for the Mohawk Nation Longhouse and is responsible for protecting the ceremonies and promoting the cultural practices of the Mohawk people. It is a faithkeeper’s role to correct historical accounts that distort the cultural values and faith of the Mohawks. In 1984, Grand Chief Mitchell was invited to perform a healing ceremony for Pope John Paul II’s visit to Canada at Midland, Ontario. Grand Chief Mitchell brought a Clanmother, Sub Chief, Mohawk Elder and three singers from the Akwesasne Mohawk Nation longhouse.

When our people tell the story of Kateri Tekakwitha, it is told with great affection and admiration for her devotion to her faith; first as a traditional Okwehonwe, then later following her conversion to the Catholic religion. There are positive stor...
