Susan M. Benedict Square

 

After a courageous battle with cancer, Mrs. Susan M. “Suzie” Benedict Square, age 51, of 672 Island Road, Cornwall Island, passed away on Monday afternoon, January 9, 2012 in the comfort of her home surrounded by family and friends.

Suzie was born March 8, 1960 in Cornwall, Ontario, the daughter of Joseph Benedict and the late Mary Boots Benedict.  She graduated from General Vanier Secondary School in Cornwall and from St. Lawrence College.  On December 31, 1988, she married Richard Allen Square at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas Egan, SJ, officiating.  He predeceased her on February 6, 1992.

Suzie was a secretary for Akwesasne Mohawk Board of Education for many years and was currently a computer technician for Mohawk Council of Akwesasne.  Suzie was an avid pool player who belonged to the Akwesasne Women’s Pool League.  She enjoyed playing Scrabble, softball, watching her children, and watching her children play sports.  

Suzie is survived by her five daughters, Rachael Square and her companion, Angel Mitchell; Heather Square and her companion, Troy Back; Leah Square and her companion, Josh Francis, all of Cornwall Island; Rikki Square and Morgan Gray, both at home; her father, Joseph Benedict of Cornwall Island; and her grandchildren, Treyia Francis, Layla Back, Rylan and Dash Adams.

She is also survived by her sisters, Jean Benedict and her companion, Joey Whitecrow; Wanda and Kenneth Sharrow; Kathy and Tom Benedict, all of Cornwall Island; her brothers, Roger and Barbara Benedict of Oka; Roy “JR” and Darlene Benedict of Cornwall Island; Phillip Benedict and his companion, Annalisa Johnson of Hogansburg, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Suzie was predeceased by her mother, Mary Benedict, 2 sisters, Marion Herne on March 29, 1985, Linda Hopps on October 11, 2006, and brother, John Sawatis Benedict on March 6, 2008.

Friends may call at her home, 672 Island Road, beginning this evening (Tuesday), 8:00 PM until 12:30 Thursday.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday 2:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores, celebrating.  Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St Regis, Quebec.
