Richard Gordon Oakes

ROOSEVELTOWN – Mr. Richard Gordon Oakes, age 75, of Mohawk River Village, passed away on Friday evening, September 23, 2011 at Iakhihsohtha Lodge. He had been in failing health for the past few months.

Gordon was born September 15, 1936 in Toronto, the son of Mabel Oakes. He attended schools in St. Regis, Quebec. On January 29, 1954, he married Ida Swamp at the St. Regis Catholic Church, the marriage ended in separation.

Gordon was an ironworker with Local 60 in Syracuse for many years until his retirement. He was an avid Syracuse Orangemen Fan and enjoyed “hanging out” at the Bingo Palace. Gordon also had a great fondness for cooking.

He is survived by his loving companion, Julia “Peggy” Crite and her daughter, Debbie Crite, both of Rooseveltown; his children, Curtis and Doreen Oakes of Toronto; Rick Jr. and Leah Oakes; Nanette Oakes; Lynelle Cook and Haket; Ross Oakes and Dorie Gibson; Donna Jocko and Merve; Kyle; and Tracie Buckshot; all of Akwesasne. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; two sisters, Brenda and Tracy Canada; and a brother, Pat Canada.

As per Gordon’s wishes, there will not be any services. Arrangements for cremation are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena, where condolences may be made online at http://www.donaldsonfh.com.
