A Voice from the Eastern Door

Race Against Drugs 2011

The 2011 Race Against Drugs kicked off three days of activities with the community night last Wednesday. This event was open to the entire community with dinner and entertainment being provided by the organizing committee.

The Hotinoshonni Dance Troupe was on hand to perform the first two days. After showing off their budding talent, members provided demonstrations to willing volunteers from the crowd.

Booths were setup by area police agencies and awareness groups handing out pamphlets of information and posters. In one corner was a simulation of what happens in the event of a car accident to passengers not buckled in. The ‘dummy’ driving the vehicle was tossed around and eventually flew out of the vehicle simulating a rollover situation.

The Akwesasne Eagle Watch was also on hand, displaying the submissions they received for their Design A Sign Contest at their ‘pit stop’.

Over 800 students attended the event from the surrounding schools to learn about drug prevention.
