Amish buggy collides with train

Amish children returning home from school in a horse-drawn buggy collided with a train in the afternoon of Nov. 23, 2010. The incident occurred on County Route 2 in Bombay, with eight children aboard the buggy. The boy controlling the reins of the buggy indicated that the horse did not respond to the reins when he tried to stop at their home, traveling well over a mile past their destination.

The train had already been going through the intersection, with traffic stopped in both directions as the horse and buggy collided with the train. The horse grazed the train, while the buggy took most of the impact allowing the horse to break free. The children remained inside the buggy throughout the whole ordeal, coming out of the incident a bit shaken up but otherwise unscathed.

Rescue workers from the Bombay Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene at 2:41pm. They stayed for approximately 45 minutes to make sure that all the children were okay. The horse was caught and after a quick examination showing that it suffered minor abrasions was loaded into a trailer for transport back to their farm.
