The St. Regis Mohawk Tribal Police held a meet and greet event last Thursday evening to celebrate the addition of several new police officers to the force. The new police are Taylor Smoke, Glen Hill, Wahiio Jacobs and Ted Cook Jr. The ceremony also included the formal introduction of Kristen Jacobs, who joined the Tribal PD two years ago.

“Being a police officer in a tribal community, especially a small community, is not an easy job,” said David Staddon, the SRMT’s director of public information, during opening remarks at the event.

James McDonald, chairman of the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Police Commission, recognized the officers for having the courage to take on such a difficult job.

“I’ve been on ride-alongs and people out there have no idea what (the officers) have to go through,” he said. “I never believed it (until) I went out with them.”

Taylor Smoke is the son of Doug and Diane Smoke. He said he is glad to be a part of the police force and it’s been going great. Wahiio Jacobs told the audience he is from Kahnawa:ke and is enjoying his new job. Ted Cook Jr., the son of Ted and Sheila Cook, said he likes seeing something new every day on the job, and Kristen Jacobs, the daughter of Charles “Butch” and Lisa Jacobs, said she’s really enjoyed the past two years as a police officer.

Tribal chiefs welcomed the new officers and gave them words of encouragement.

“I know that there are a lot of people in our community that think you’re doing a good job,” said Chief Randy Hart.
