Eagle Watch, also known as the Oxycontin Task Force, had its second community walk around the village of Kanatakon in the evening of Friday, June 11, 2010.  The purpose of the walk was to raise awareness about drug abuse and to let people know that dealing drugs is hurting our community and our children and it is not our way.  Peace walkers chanted statements such as “Save our Children, No More Drugs” and “Break the Silence, No More Drugs” as they walked past known drug dealers homes.  It was a very powerful walk with several community members joined in along the way or came out of their homes to clap and cheer their support for getting rid of drugs in Akwesasne.  The walk was followed by a short candlelight vigil at the “Y” where a few community members spoke about the need to work together to combat the drugs, especially Oxycontin.  Children were told to look at the adults and know that they are here to protect them and that they are loved.  Adults were told to look at the children and commit to protecting them and saving their future.  Finally, a moment of silence was held for everyone our community has lost to drugs and violence.  The next Community Walk will be on Cornwall Island on Monday, June 21st – Aboriginal Day.  Everyone who wants Akwesasne to be a safe and healthy place to raise our children is begged to attend and show your support – there is strength in numbers.  Eagle Watch will be meeting on Wednesdays at the Senior’s Center sun-room in Hogansburg, behind the police station, from 6-8pm.
