S.D. & G. Akwesasne Children’s Treatment Centre held their annual meeting on Wednesday October 14, 2009 at best Western Parkway Inn, Cornwall.

Everyone was welcome; the special guest speaker of the evening was Mr. Phil Fontaine, the former Assembly of First Nations National Chief for three terms.

Fontaine’s speech was on Reconciliation and Healing. He delivered an emotional speech full of hope, to get past the pain suffered at the hands of Federal Governments and Church entities. Phil Fontaine lived at a Residential School for ten years.

Mr. Fontaine was responsible for getting the Federal Government to apologize and compensate financially to all Residential School survivors. Fontaine also went to Rome and had an audience with Pope John Paul II, most recently also Pope Benedict VI, who expressed deep sorrow and shame for the degradation the Aboriginals suffered at the hands of individuals in the Catholic Church.

A long stemmed rose was handed to each of the ladies and they were told they were special. It was a gift from Sean Adams, the past Board Vice-President.

Many were awarded plaques for their contribution to the Children’s Treatment Centre.
