Mental illness strikes more than six million people right across the country. The death toll for Canadian suicide each year is 4,000 (aged 15-24) according to published reports.

Participators in MIAW Marie Morrell, founder of Parade of Nations and Gere Jacobs.

Not enough Canadians know about this mental illness in our society. It is not prejudice and it can happen to anyone. A walk was held in Cornwall on Oct. 5 to bring public awareness to mental illness. Around 200 people in the surrounding area of S.D. &G. gathered for the Mental Illness Awareness Walk. In addition, very present were the Akwesasro:non, plus student volunteers from several classes at Cornwall Collegiate Vocational School. The Awareness Walk is to help change the way we view mental illness.

A free BBQ waited for all participants at the Band shell at Lamoureux Park, provided by Benson’s Auto Parts and a beautiful cake from the Independent grocery store.

Recovery is possible.
