The Buffalo Bandits ended their two-game losing streak Saturday night at HSBC Arena by defeating the Portland LumberJax by the final of 14-4. John Tavares and Cory Bomberry each led the way for the Bandits with three goals and three assists. The Bandits defense was great all night, highlighted by goaltender Ken Montour’s 26 saves and four goals allowed.

Portland took an early 2-1 lead when Tim Campeau and Peter Morgan scored back-to-back goals in the first quarter. Buffalo closed the first period with back-to-back goals of their own by Tavares and Bomberry to take a 3-2 lead. The Bandits then outscored the LumberJax 2-1 in the second quarter to take a 5-3 halftime lead.

The second-half scoring opened when Cory Conway connected for the LumberJax at the 5:46 mark, bringing Portland to within one goal of the Bandits. From that point on, the Bandits took control and scored the last nine goals of the game.

Portland’s four goals were distributed evenly, with Derek Malawsky scoring in addition to the aforementioned goals by Campeau, Morgan and Conway. Matt Disher started in net for the LumberJax, allowing 11 goals and stopping 31 shots in 50:50 of action.

The game was a rematch of last year’s championship game in which Buffalo defeated Portland at HSBC Arena, 14-13.
