Indian Time - A Voice from the Eastern Door

The 18th Annual Akwesasne Winter Carnival is being held February 11 – 15, 2009 in Kawehnoke. Here are a few highlights: There will be various breakfasts, luncheons and dinners held, as well as concession stands for food offerings. Wednesday starts out with the Winter Carnival Torch Run and ends with the Elders Dinner & Dance at the Kawehnoke Recreation.

Thursday evening we can gather at Iakhihsohtha for the Snowflake Gathering or the Akwesasne Library for Family Game Night. Friday’s highlights include the Battle Royale at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena, an Ace to King Tournament at the Tri-District Elders Building and a Coffee Night at the Kawehnoke Recreation featuring Tom Porter providing some Storytelling. Saturday starts with a Family Puzzle Contest, as well as a Horseshoe Tournament, Akwesasne Minor Hockey Friendship Games and ends with a Fashion Show at the Kawehnoke Recreation, Rock & Skate at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena and a Midnight Madness Coed Volleyball Tournament at AMS. The Winter Carnival finishes on Sunday with a Families on Ice Competition, Boot Hockey and a Fastbreakers Women’s Hockey Game at the A’nowara’ko:wa Arena and a Closing Ceremony and Dinner at the Kawehnoke Recreation.

Throughout the Winter Carnival there are other activities happening, including the Snow Sculpture judging, Fishing Derby, Photo Contest, Chili Cook-off, Appreciation Wall, Kids Craft Night and a display Honoring our Quilters, and …more.
