According to one Customs official, a new “informed compliance” policy is in effect beginning today. This policy does not change what documents are currently accepted, but it gives border agents new instructions about informing travelers about the new rules that will be in effect starting June l, 2009.

CBP has been misinforming Haudenosaunee travelers about the status of the Red Card.

If you or anyone you know is told by a CBP agent that your Red Card is not acceptable for passage into the U.S. by land, please know that this is not true. Take the name of the agent and contact Cherie Morris of CBP in Washington at 202-344-3325, and she will assist in making sure the agent is properly educated about current CBP policies.
