Dear Editor:

Dear Editor:

With the approaching winter season, the rising cost of energy (for example home heating fuel) will make it more difficult for families and individuals to be able to meet the rising costs of heating their homes. This can be particularly difficult for those who are on a fixed income. Home heating can account for between 40- 60% of your energy bill. Electric space beaters if used every day for approximately 8 hours per day can add in additional $45-$50 per month on your bill depending upon your electric rates and can be dangerous if left unattended or used with inadequate wiring.

Here are some steps you can take to help lower the cost of heating your home:

• Make sure your house is properly insulated

• Make sure that your house is weatherized (You may be eligible to apply for weatherization services)

• Consider lowering your thermostat to 68 degrees

• Lowering the temperature to 60 degrees at night and when away can save you an additional 15%

• Lowering the temperature to 68 degrees from 70 degrees can save you an additional 5%
