Youth take part in ancient Coming of Age Ceremony

 

Thirty-four young boys and girls took part in the Rites of Passage ritual in Akwesasne this year. The ancient tradition is being revived by parents and community members.

In the distant past our ancestors performed initiation ceremonies for boys and girls who were transforming into young adults. This monumental event was not only critical to the success of a child but ensured the health and prosperity of the tribe....
