    They did it. For the first time in team history, the Akwesasne Indians are the 2015 Canadian Lacrosse Association champions, claiming the Founders' Cup in a round robin tournament in Calgary, Alberta. Seth Oakes was the team's offensive leader, chiming in 22 goals and 23 assists. Skkylar Thomas netted an overall 12 goals and 25 helpers. Russ Oakes scored 18 times overall while assisting 16 plays.     Syracuse, NY – August 21, 2015 – The Iroquois Nationals announced their official team roster today for the 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships (WILC).     More than a dozen bands took the stage on Saturday, Aug. 22 to help raise money for the Ieweras Gray Foundation, which helps Akwesasne families dealing with cancer and other tragedies. The acts converged on Akwesasne from Indian Country near and far, some with roots as distant as the Anishinabe and Milwaukee Nations. The music came from across the spectrum, ranging from traditional singing and drumming to hip hop to folk to rock to what headliner Keith Secola calls his "Native Americana" style....

    The Akwesasne vs. Kahnawake rivalry has produced some exciting lacrosse finals over the decades, and last weekend another was added to the books. The Second Annual Akwesasne Masters Lacrosse Championship was held on Cornwall Island and the visitors won this round. The Kahnawake Rapids met Jobu's Medicine Men in the Gold Medal game and were comprised of local Akwesasne players.     On Tuesday, the Junior Paddle Program launched from Romeos in Massena with the plan to paddle all the way to the St. Regis Recreation. Though they didn't make it, they did get to the Alcoa ramp on Rt. 37, which is still quite a trip. Great job paddlers!     This year, the American Legion Riders from Post #925 (Norfolk) held a charity motorcycle ride to benefit the American Legion Legacy Foundation Fund, which helps provide educational money for the children of service people who have died for this country. We were able to present a check to them for $3576.     The scorching hot weather continued last week but the kids braved the heat to have some fun at the Akwesasne Mohawk School. The Akwesasne Board of Education held their annual Funfair with bounce houses, movies, games and waterslides, not to mention free snow cones to cool them off. Local students who had entries in science fairs over the school year had their projects on display for games and horse rides were available for the kids as well.     The Ontario government has signed a political accord with the Chiefs of Ontario that Premier Kathleen Wynne says will guide relations between First Nations and the province.
