    Greg Horn|Jun 2, 2011

They had a lot of talent on that team.” The Iroquois Nationals fell 19-6 to Canada in a rematch from both the 2007 and 2003 WILC. In ’03 Canada downed the Nationals 21-4 and 15-14 in overtime at the ’07 WILC. “I thought we had a...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 2, 2011

Letter to the Editor: I recently saw Barbara Lazore’s picture on the front page of the Indian Time Newspaper. I heard she wanted to run for Chief again but I hoped the information was wrong. Please, people of Akwesasne, wake up. We don’t need her to be our Chief again. The only thing she has going for herself is that she speaks Mohawk. She will be full of promises again, like before. She’ll go from house to house, person to person, and promise them the world then pull dirty deals behind their backs. What did she accomplish when she was Chief be...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 2, 2011

Letter to the Editor: On May 7th, I nominated Cecil Garrow for Chief. As a result of my daughter Shelley becoming sub-chief I realize how important it is to have a hard working, honest person in office. Cecil is that person! I have known Cecil all of my life. Besides his strong work ethic and moral standards, Cecil is an educated man with common sense. Cecil has an electrical engineering degree from Syracuse University. That itself is quite impressive, since our generation was not encouraged to become educated. Cecil took advantage of the...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 2, 2011

Dear Editor, Sekon, I am writing in support of Cecil Garrow for Tribal Chief. He is my brother but that is not the only reason I am voting for him. I know that he is a man of integrity, hard work and trustworthiness and would make a fine leader for this community. Cecil is twenty- four years my senior. Our parents died when I was fairly young. Our mother, Rose Peters Garrow, died when I was nine and our father, Maxwell, died when I was thirteen. Since he was the oldest he took his responsibility seriously and did not hesitate to make me part...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 2, 2011

Letter to the Editor: My name is Karen Francis and I’m writing this letter to voice my endorsement of my uncle Cecil Garrow’s decision to run for Chief. My Uncle Cecil is the most honest person I know with high moral standards and the best work ethic. He voices his own beliefs and is able to listen with an open mind to others’ opinions. He enjoys debating tough topics such as religion and politics with the intention of gaining more knowledge from the people he encounters while treating them with the utmost respect. Cecil has been commi...

  • Letter to the editor

    Jun 2, 2011

Letter to the Editor: Once again the time is upon us to vote in our new tribal chiefs. We, as a community are always hoping for a tribal leadership that will be fair and honest. We, as a community have yet to see that in our tribal chiefs. The promises of community involvement or community voice is a joke, we have yet to see any of the tribal chiefs keep their promises to the community that they use in their campaign, promises of community economic development or jobs for the community, it never happens. You go to monthly meetings to ask...

  • Candidates for Sub-Chief

    Jun 2, 2011

Gary Cole Why do you believe you are the best candidate for Tribal Sub-Chief? I have the experience serving two terms as Kawehno:ke District Chief. I have experience in negotiating and lobbying. I’m very intuitive and like to be involved. I’m the type of person that I feel can still assist the community in building itself and with change to become a better community. This change has to be done with the assistance of the community, they have to provide the direction and we have to be good listeners. I’ve had training in mediation and can help re...

  • IETHI’NISTENHA ONHWENSTIA FOR OUR MOTHER EARTH

    Salli Benedict|Jun 2, 2011

Earth Names…Naming our Children When we name our children, it is the responsibility of the community to name the child appropriately. Usually only one person at a time holds a particular name. That helps us identify individuals more specifically, and to treat each person with special attention. Numerous Kahniakehaka names that are given to our children celebrate a relationship and our connection with the Natural World. Our children are given names that are the attributes of weather, of seasons, of plants or they reiterate our relationship w...
