    B Sonny White|Mar 7, 2013

Anowarakowa Arena - It was an exciting night for the Akwesasne Wolves Jr. B Hockey Team as they overpowered the Casselman Vikings 4-2. The Wolves jumped out of the gate quickly as forward Oakley Thomas caught a pass from Dominick Coyle and Justin Rutley and converted it, putting the puck past Vikings’ Alexandre Michaud in the opening minutes of the 1st period to get the Wolves on the board first. But Casselman battled back in the offensive zone with a series of passes starting with Curtis C...

  • Divide and Conquer?

    Mar 7, 2013

Having monthly general meetings should help the entire community of Akwesasne. This was passed at last week’s Tuesday meeting of council. Last week’s district meeting on Kawehnoke ended without any formal announcement. Some members were sitting there dumfounded as the chiefs walked out. The comment was made to me, “Is it over?” The chiefs walked out after it turned to a personal attack on me. I feel that the attack could have been handled differently. It did not have to be done in a public forum, but that is the price that is paid if you spe...

  • PEOPLE V. ROGER THOMAS Right Issue…Wrong Lawyer

    Mar 7, 2013

In the summer of 2012, local fisherman and tribal member Roger Thomas was arrested for fishing out of season by the NY state DEC. He was fishing at the mouth of the Grasse River and the St. Lawrence. Although Mr. Thomas could have simply appeared before the local Massena Justice Court and would have likely paid a fine for this alleged violation, he decided, and rightfully so, to defend against the charge as this issue was much bigger than a man, a fish and a dollar. In fact, this issue was (and is) about not only our native fishing rights, but...

The adults are teachin...

  • I Asked For It

    An Anonymous Mother|Mar 7, 2013

With all my nagging the boys I shouldn’t have been surprised when the boys came up with a nickname for me. I first caught on when I saw Little Brother mouth a word to Big Brother and watched the two of them giggle. When they looked towards me their faces went back straight. That is when I figured out they had a secret. What really gave it away was how sneaky Little Brother was attempting to be. That kid has started to talk so much clearer that he uses his newly understandable words to be a tattletale about everything. He is not the quiet, whisp...
