Billiards league gives pool sharks a place to play regularly

The Mohawk Billiards ACS 8-ball League has recently finished the fourth week of play. There are 6 teams from establishments such as Gardners, 37 West Lounge, Spragues and the All Inn Lounge.

Lisa Sprague of Spragues Restaurant in Rooseveltown, NY says about the Mohawk Billiards 8-ball league ‘It’s very beneficial for business and keeps the players in practice. I recommend that other bars join, the league officers are doing a great job.”

Corrine Johnson and Priscila Thompson form the league executive and operate the league.

The ACS league has 50+ players participating in the pool on Wednesday night. The American Cuesport Alliance has over 200,000 players across North America. The goal of our league is to sanction the players so they qualify to take their teams to the nationals in Las Vegas in 2009. They will win trophies and cash prizes presented at the annual banquet to be held at the All Inn lounge in September.

Cody David, recent champion pool player at the All Inn says it’s fun, he likes the one on one format and the handicap system gives everyone a better advantage.

There are so many talented pool players in the community and it’s good for them to compete nationally and see how Akwesasne stands in the world of pool. We are good enough to compete especially since there are different levels of competition at the ACS Championships.

Lisa Gray, pool player, says ‘It’s more interesting to play because of the handicap averages and the standings provided each week, she hopes that more players will join next session in the fall to continue with it. She likes the advantages of setting a goal to go to Las Vegas to compete.’

The difference in this style is that it’s one on one play so everyone gets a chance to play.

We are proud of Mel and Joe Herne who placed 2nd at the Canadian National 8-ball in Toronto in the spring, as well Joe placed 2nd in the B division Men’s Singles 8-ball. They own the Mohawk Billiards store on Route 37 in the Kanienkehaka Plaza and show everyone that pool is fun and their skills paid off. They supply us with our pool playing needs. Mel Herne of Mohawk Billiards, says the summer league makes it good for business. the handicap system makes it more fair in competing with other teams.

The league is running a raffle to help toward the grand prize of travel expenses to the Nationals, first prize is a laptop. The top seller of tickets earns a laptop and the seller of the winning ticket gets a Scorpion NT-6 Natural donated by Mohawk Biliards. Keep your eye out for those pool players.
