Braves Defeat Thunderbirds To Earn Spot In President's Cup

The St. Regis Braves have earned the right to represent the Three Nations Senior B Lacrosse League and Quebec Senior B Lacrosse League in the President's Cup at the end of the month.

They clinched the spot after beating the Tyendinaga Thunderbirds in a best-of-seven series, four games to two, with their crowning win coming after an overtime nailbiter.

"The boys did it. They closed out the final series against Tyendinaga ... Excellent series and stellar perseverance on the part of the St. Regis Braves," Coach Chuck Brown said in an email. "We now look forward to the Presidents Cup in Six Nations, Aug. 27-Sept. 3, 2017," Brown said. "It's an eight-day tournament, nine games, 25-man rosters, one cup. We are excited to represent our home and all of the people that supported us through thick and thin. Let's go Braves!"

In the championship game, played Thursday, Aug. 17 at Deseronto Recreation Centre, the Braves and Thunderbirds started out trading goals in the first period. Tyendinaga's Shane Jackson got things started at 6:15, followed by back-to-back St. Regis goals at 10:57 and 11:16. Tyendinaga's Seth Oakes tied the score before the first buzzer.


The Braves took control in the middle stanza, with five goals thanks to Ty Thompson, Dalston Day, Jacob Ruest and two from Angus Leborgne. The T-birds managed three goals, two from Oakes and one from Jackson.

Returning to the box for the third frame, Tyendinaga stepped up and outscored their opponents 4-2. Ben Green scored two, with singletons contributed by Oakes and Ky Horn. Ruest and Kyle Lewis fashioned the two goals that led to a tie game. Jake Lazore, the Braves netminder, was tagged with the win. Tyendinaga goalminder Trey Adams was credited the loss.


Lewis scored the game-winning goal in overtime at 2:15, sealing the Braves spot in President's Cup. Derek Hopps and Jake Lazore assisted.

Game five was Aug. 16 at Anowarako:wa Arena with Tyendinaga winning 16-10. Jacob Ruest led the St. Regis offense with three goals and two assists. Blake Kenny had two goals and three helpers. Hiana Thompson scored once and assisted once. Brett Bucktooth and Ty Thompson each had two assists. Sam Bradman scored twice. Angus Leborgne and Geoff McNulty each scored solo goals. Goaltender Jake Lazore was saddled with the loss. For the T-birds, Shayne Jackson had a game-high two goals and eight assists. Mark Mathews had one goal and five helpers. Seth Oakes scored four times and assisted once. Chris Attwood had one goal and four assists. Joe Hall had three goals and one assist. Ben Green scored once and assisted once. Shane Francis fashioned two goals. Brandon Francis recorded a pair of helpers. Tim Bergin and Adam Bomberry netted singletons. Ky Tarbell, Travis Elvins and Haneh Brant each assisted one play. Goalie Trey Adams earned the win.


The previous evening, the Thunderbirds earned their first win of the series at Deseronto Recreation Centre. The final score was 14-12. Jacob Ruest was the leading Braves scorer with four goals and one assist. Hiana Thompson had a single goal and a trio of helpers. Angus Leborgne had two goals and two assists. Blake Kenny and Geoff McNulty each had a goal and an assist. Derek Hopps had two assists. Brett Bucktooth, Dwight Bero and Matt Noble each scored once. Sam Bradman had one assist. Netminder Torrey Bigtree was stuck with a loss. For Tyendinaga, Seth Oakes scored two goals and assisted four. Tim Bergin scored once and assisted four plays. Mark Mathews had two goals and three assists. Chris Attwood had four goals with a helper. Shayne Jackson had four assists. Joe Hall scored twice. Ky Horn had two assists. Ky Tarbell had a goal and an assist. Shane Francis and Adam Bomberry each scored single goals. Goalie Trey Adams earned the win.

Game three saw the Braves win by a final tally of 11-6 on Aug. 15 at Anowarako:wa Arena. For the Braves, Brett Bucktooth had a hat trick with three assists. Hiana Thompson scored three times and assisted twice. Blake Kenny had four assists. Ty Thompson scored once and assisted twice. Jacob Ruest had two helpers. Geoff McNulty scored a goal with a helper. Mike Lazore fashioned a solo assist. Angus Leborgne, Jarrett Jacobs and Derek Hopps each scored once. Jake Lazore earned the win in the net with 47 saves. On the Tyendinaga side, Mark Mathews led the team with one goal and four assists. Shayne Jackson scored four times. Tim Bergin assisted three plays. Joe Hall, Seth Oakes and Charlie Goodleaf each had single helpers. Chris Attwood netted a solo goal. Goaltenders Trey Adams (15:13, seven saves) and Alex Fortier (44:47, 34 saves) split the game in the net.
