SLC Section 10 Division II Champions Over SRCS

Section X Academic All-Northern- Back: David Terrance, Tanner Tarbell. Front: Collin Benedict.

The old saying "it's not over until it's over" rang true on February 29, at the Section 10 Division II Sectional game at Cheel Arena between St. Lawrence and Salmon River High Schools. It looked like the Shamrocks were heading to State playoffs after scoring early in the third period to go ahead 3-0. The Larries stunned by going on to score four unanswered goals to win 4-3.

The Shamrocks took an early 1-0 lead just 28 seconds after the opening face-off when Tanner Tarbell won the face-off and passed it off to Kenan Herne who quickly found the back of the Larrie's net. Jay Chubb upped the score, 2-0, with an unassisted goal at the 4:48 mark.

Both teams played hard in the second but the period went scoreless. The Shamrocks were called for a penalty early in the third but they capitalized on a two-one break. Tehakwirakarenrons McDonald shot on the Larries net only to have it stopped by goaltender, Rico DiMatteo, but Tarbell was waiting to slip in the rebound at the 3:31 mark.

The Larries seem to come alive scoring on that same penalty and then just 25 seconds later Will Arquiett made the score 2-3 when converted off a pass from Ian Bressett. Nicolas Kowalchuk tied the score 3-3 at the 7:36 mark after leading a three on one break.

"We came and got the 2-0 lead and we had a solid second period and things looked pretty good when we got the shortie to go up by three" commented Salmon River Coach Tim Cook. "But give St. Lawrence credit. No doubt they are a good team for them to be able to come back and win the way they did. We just weren't able to finish them off."

Section X All-Northern Second Team: Tyler Sisto, Tanner Tarbell.

Jarrad Jackson stopped 26 shots in the Shamrock effort while DiMatteo turned aside 25 shots for the St. Lawrence Sectional win.

"We played a very tough non-league schedule and I'm proud of the way the kids kept coming after St. Lawrence tonight even after they went ahead" said Cook. "We talked after the game about how the bigger the game, the worse it hurts to lose".

"We are very proud of our kids. They bought into what coaches were trying to get them to do. We lose nine seniors but we have a very strong core of younger players and we'll learn from this".
