"Jedi" the Championship Dog

Dwayne Lazore and his dogs, Jedi and Lexi sit in front of the many awards they have won since they began competing in June.

What started with "a wing and a prayer" has burgeoned into a professional dog breeder, dog show career. Dwayne Lazore purchased two Basenji puppies six months ago; six months later "Jedi", the male Basenji puppy has earned more awards than most adult Basenji dogs. In fact Lazore was advised against showing Jedi, as it turned out, Jedi has earned enough points in a very complicated point system to be considered a "champion show dog".

Basenji dogs originate from Africa and at one time were breed for royalty; the Pharaohs. Hunting in packs the Basenji dogs hunted the mighty lion, running as fast as the lion and attacking the beast from all sides at once. Now, in present times, the Basenji is considered "independent, poised and smart" and as for their looks they are considered; "compact, elegant, and with no doggy smell".

Jedi, his formal name is; Mibre Jedi Kinglu Luke Skywalker and his sister is Lexi Princess Leia. The name includes the breeder and line of the dogs they were bred from. With such formal names needed for competitions, at home is a different matter with both dogs answering to just "Jedi" or "Lexi". They were playful; bouncing, running and generally just having fun as dogs normally do. Once asked to sit or stand, they come to attention with poise and dignity. Friendly and spirited, their breeding betray their long line of breeding from Africa.

Jedi is the big winner in the family as being the coveted male dog with his two colors of brown and white, he has earned top honors such as Best of Breed, Best of Opposite in Specialty, Best Puppy in Show, Variety Puppy Group, Owner Handled Variety Group, Best of Puppy in shows in national and international competitions from Florida, Kansas, Iowa, Texas and in their first Canadian competition in Long Sault.

Lazore attributes his success as a owner of a champion show dog and handler at dog shows to his belief in positive thinking and prayer, "Who would believe I would be where I am today in just six months, most dogs don't achieve this stature until they are much more mature."

Lazore was presented with a handmade quilt made by the Basenji Club of Canada and presented at the Long Sault International Dog Show.

Lazore plans to continue training and competing his dogs until they are National Champions and to venture into to breeding Basenjis in the near future.
