CECELIA K. SQUARE

 

AKWESASNE - Mrs. Cecelia Katherine (Thompson) Square, 87, of 60 Angus Thomas Memorial Road, St. Regis, peacefully passed away Tuesday afternoon, November 4, 2014 at her home.

Cecelia was born October 27, 1927 in Akwesasne, the daughter of the late Angus and Catherine Beauvais Thompson.  She attended schools in Spanish and Prescott, Ontario, as well at St. Lawrence College in Cornwall.   On August 15, 1950, she married Thomas Square at St. Regis Catholic Church.  He predeceased her on March 8, 1964. 

During the late 60's to mid-70's, Cecelia worked for Canada Post, operating a post office out of her home.  She was a paper courier for the Cornwall Standard Freeholder during that time.  Cecelia will be known mostly as a Federally recognized Section 107 Judge in the community of Akwesasne.  She was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Kateri Circle, where she attended many Kateri Conferences.  She was a charter member of the American Legion Post #1479 Auxiliary and also a member of the Amvets Post #35 Auxiliary in Florida.  Cecelia enjoyed the "3 B's" of bingo, beading, and bowling with bingo being her greatest enjoyment.  She was an avid reader and also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing the slot machines, scrabble and cards.


She is survived by her five children, Mary Kay Square of Akwesasne; Wilma and John Zumpano of New Hartford, NY; Rarahkwisere and Tsieriwiiosta Square of Akwesasne; Susan Square of Akwesasne, QC; and Harold Square and his fianceé Patty Elm of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Thomas Wayne Chubb, Jr, Jon Joseph Square, Yvette Marie White, Louis Raymond Square, Philip Wayne Cook, Anthony Square, Lisa Nicole Hasty, Tehakoros Square, Isawanes David, Zachary Light, Joleigh Square, and Harrison Square; 13 great grandchildren; her sister, Mary Madeline Lazore of Akwesasne, Ontario; her step-sister, Christie Roundpoint of Akwesasne, Ontario; and many nieces and nephews.

Cecelia was predeceased by her son, Richard Square, July 17, 1980 and 6 brothers.

Friends may call at Kateri Hall beginning 7:00 PM, Wednesday until 10:00 AM Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Anthony Osuji, celebrating.  Burial will follow in the parish cemetery.  The family invites all to her memorial meal which will be held at the American Legion following the services at the cemetery.
