Flea and Tick Prevention is a Year-Round Job!

By Jennifer Herne, LVT

As you may have noticed the weather is starting to cool off and with the cooler weather we don't have to worry about flea and tick prevention, right? Wrong. Flea and tick prevention is recommended year round. You are probably wondering why you should use preventative year round, to prevent of course. Fleas and ticks are more than just a nuisance, they cause disease, and on again off again preventive measures are not the optimum way to safeguard your pets and families. By the time you notice the fleas, an infestation has already started and the fleas have already laid eggs in your home.

It is difficult to predict when flea season starts in the spring so this is why it is recommended to apply preventative year round. It is also possible to have a flea infestation in your home in the winter months. The fleas live quite well in your heated homes all winter long feeding on your pets.

Sporadic treatment of fleas and ticks make it difficult to prevent infestations. The best prevention for flea and tick diseases is year round prevention. So, make sure you visit your local veterinarian for flea, tick and heartworm preventatives for the winter months.
