RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL SURVIVORS TO RECEIVE PERSONAL CREDITS FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne would like to inform the community that residents who received a Common Experience Payment (CEP) for the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA) may be eligible for additional non-cash Personal Credits of up to $3,000 each for educational purposes.

All CEP recipients will be able to choose to transfer their Personal Credits to family members (as defined in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and the Terms and Conditions) for educational purposes.  They also have the option to transfer their Personal Credits to an approved educational organization, such as the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education. Once the Personal Credits have been distributed, any amount remaining in the Trust Fund on January 1, 2015 will be given to the National Indian Brotherhood Trust Fund and the Inuvialuit Education Foundation to be used for educational programs.

The deadline to submit your Personal Credits Acknowledgement Form is October 31, 2014.  Survivors of residential schools should have received a large package from Personal Credits Administrator with Crawford Class Action Services.  This package contains the application that needs to be completed and submitted to access your personal credits.  If you have not received a package but did attend residential schools in Canada, you can contact Kawehno:ke District Chief Louise Thompson for assistance in obtaining, completing and submitting the application.   She can be reached at the Mohawk Government/Admin II Building at 613-575-2348.
