Notice to the Community

 


In order for the Akwesasne Membership Board to determine if children will be granted full Membership under the Akwesasne Membership Code, the Board must consider the following criteria:

a) Whether the applicant was born in the community

b) Commitment to Mohawk culture, traditions, lifestyle, and knowledge of language and customs

c) Individual or family ties to Members of the community

d) Member of a Clan

e) Degree of involvement in the affairs of the community

f) Reasons for wanting to be a member

This is the same criteria that is used for applications for Probationary Membership from adults.  The criteria is in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code.

The following persons have applied for Membership under the Akwesasne Membership Code.

Kelsey Boots, age 18, daughter of Wayne Boots (Akwesasne) and Karen (Helmer) Boots, a non-Indian.


Sarah Durant, age 15, daughter of Madeline Peters (Akwesasne) and Aaron Durant, a non-Indian.

Sarah Lafrance, age 14, daughter of David Benedict Jr. (Akwesasne) and Natalie (Lafrance) Jackson, a non-Indian.

Sienna, age 18, Kayanna, age 17, Hannah, age 16, and Kayden Cook-Jackson, age 14, children of Jerrald Jackson and Frances Cook (Akwesasne);

Jerrad Lewis, age 15, son of Jolene Jackson (Akwesasne) and Shaun Lewis (Six Nations).

Elizabeth Sawatis, age 22, daughter of Khristy Sawatis (Akwesasne) and Scott Brouillard, a non-Indian.  She has also applied for a Residency Permit.

Delmer Iserhoff, age 18, applied for a Residency Permit, he is registered with the Moose Cree First Nation.


Community Members have until Friday, December 6, 2013 to indicate whether they wish to make submissions regarding the above individuals by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics.

At the Akwesasne Membership Board’s October 5 meeting, the Board granted full Akwesasne Membership to Shayla Oakes (17), Aisha Delormier (18), Eric (10), Annabelle 12), Nataliya (3 months) and Kyler (4) Mitchell, Alysa (13), Carlie (14), Paige (17) and Tessa Lafrance (8) and Kariwiiohstha Dupree (14) because they meet the criteria in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code.

At the Akwesasne Membership Board’s October 9 meeting, the Board granted full Akwesasne Membership to Diane Clench (54), Myles (16), Marie (11) and Logan (15) Delormier, and Seanna Villeneauve (16) because they meet the criteria in Section 11 of the Akwesasne Membership Code.  Also, the Akwesasne Membership Board granted a one year Residency Permit to Cameron Taylor and Laura Thompson.

Community members wishing to appeal the Membership Board’s decisions on the above applicants have 30 days to appeal to the Council of Elders by contacting the Office of Vital Statistics located at the Cornwall Island Administration Building #3, at (613) 575-2250 ext. 1011.
