SHAWN MARTIN

Class of 1987

During his career as a Salmon River Shamrock, Shawn participated in soccer, basketball, and track & field.

Shawn lettered three years on the soccer team. In 1985, he was selected as the teams most improved player and in 1985 he was team MVP. During the 1985-86 and 1986-87 winter season, you would find Shawn playing basketball for the Shamrocks. It was in the spring where Shawn would make his mark in track & field, preparing himself for what would become an outstanding college career at Hartwick College.

Shawn was selected to the All-Northern 2nd team in 1987 in both the long jump and as a member of the 3200 meter relay team. Shawn also held the school record for long jump at 20’5’’.

Shawn was continuously on the school Honor Roll, a member of National Honor Society, a member of Student Council, and was recognized in Who’s Who in Music 1986-87.


In 1989, while at college, Shawn placed 5th at the NY D3Indoor Championships in the 1000m; 3rd in the NY D3 Outdoor Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase; and 33rd at the NY D3 Cross Country Championships. Shawn also served as team captain of the Cross Country squad and was selected as team MVP at the end of the season.

In 1990, Shawn ran 3rd at the NY D3Indoor Championships in the 1000m; 3rd in the NY Division III Outdoor Championships in the 3000m Steeplechase; 6th at the NY D3 Cross Country Championships; and 10th at the NY Cross Country Regionals. Shawn was also team captain in Cross Country, Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field.

In 1991, in his senior year at Hartwick, Shawn again served as team captain in Cross Country, Indoor & Outdoor Track and Field. At the NY D3 Indoor Championships Shawn placed 2nd in the 1000m race. In outdoor track Shawn achieved his greatest career honor as All-American by placing 8th in the 3000m Steeplechase at the D3 National Track & Field Championships. To qualify for the National Championship, Shawn placed 1st at the NY D3 Outdoor Championships. Shawn was once again selected as team MVP for his efforts in Outdoor Track & Field.

When his college career ended, Shawn competed as an adult throughout the Northeast and Canada.

Today, Shawn has or continues to serve the Salmon River athletic community by coaching Cross Country, Track & Field, Basketball, and North Franklin athletics.
