David Curry

 

Snye – Mr. David “The Mayor” Curry, age 86, of Sugarbush Island, passed away Monday evening at Tsiionkwanonhso:te, Cornwall Island Chronic Care Facility.

He was born October 21, 1923 in Syne, Quebec, the son of Frank Armstrong and Josephine Curry Lazore.   David was a handyman throughout Akwesasne for many years. At one time he also worked for various farms including the Cook’s and the McDonald’s. He also worked for a short time on the Seaway and at Alcoa.

He was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of its Rosary Society.

He was an avid Montreal Canadians Hockey fan and enjoyed watching lacrosse.  He liked working on his yard, mowing, gardening and cutting wood.  He was an ace horseman and was extremely knowledgeable in all kinds of history. He cared very much for his “grandchildren”.

Dave is survived by 3 sisters: Mary Herne, Florence Cook and Bertha Armstrong, all of Akwesasne; and many nieces and nephews.


He was predeceased by a son at age 7, by two sisters, Sarah Lazore and Helen Lazore and three brothers, Jake, Angus and Mose Lazore.

Friends may call at the home of Kevin “Sturge” and Helen Lazore, 1962 Sugarbush Island, beginning 2:00 PM Wednesday until 10:00 AM Friday.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Friday 11:00 AM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. George H. Belgarde, officiating.  Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, St. Regis, Quebec, following the services.  Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
