William V. “Billy” Francis

 

Mr. William V. “Billy” Francis, Jr., age 56, of 1351 State Route 37, Akwesasne, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon (January 25, 2009) in the emergency room at Massena Memorial Hospital.

He was born May 29, 1952 in Cornwall, Ontario, the son of the late William and Phoebe LaFrance Francis. He attended schools in St. Regis, Quebec, General Vanier, Cornwall, and Salmon River Central School, where he played football for both. He attended Monroe Community College and was working on his bachelor’s degree with Rochester Institute of Technology. He married Jennifer E. Jacobs on October 5, 1973 in Rochester.

He was an ironworker with Local #440 in Utica, until becoming disabled in 1989. He enjoyed doing beadwork and carving wood. He loved music, having recorded many selections. He was a Sun dancer and enjoyed the traditional ceremonies. His greatest enjoyments were his grandchildren and the time he spent with them. The friendships he made were also very important to him.


Billy is survived by his wife, Jennifer; his son, Alex Francis and his companion Jessie Smoke, Akwesasne; by 3 grandchildren, Makaylann, Kien, and Elsie; by 4 sisters, Linda M. Tessier, Phyllis Terrance, Martha LaFrance, and Patricia and Harvey Boots, all of Akwesasne; by a brother, Stanley P. Francis, Sr., Akwesasne; his best friend, Baihia Lazore, Akwesasne, Quebec; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents and a grandson, Alexander Francis.

Friends called at the family home starting Tuesday until Wednesday. He will be cremated following the calling hours. Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
