Elders experience health benefits of Nintendo’s Wii

Club members of the St. Regis Mohawk Seniors may not be a child by definition but they’re all kids at heart. That’s thanks in part to the Center’s purchase of a Nintendo Wii.

Dorothy Jacobs, Susan Jackson, Mary Louise White, Ruth Cook, and Bertha Horn learned Wii basics Tuesday.

Every Tuesday morning training is offered to the members and guests at the Center. The Wii – a new game console by Nintendo – is an innovate approach to video gaming. Players stand in front of the television and make hand and body motions the same way they would if they were playing the sport in “real life.”

This past Thursday seniors practiced their golf swing and learned the basics about Wii. They had some unplanned assistance from a youth on break from school, Rawerous Kaudeyr.

Lynn LaFrance, who was helping the seniors with the Wii this past Tuesday, commended the game system for its many benefits. For the elders who are not able to stand for long periods of time, playing a bowling Wii game was still an option.

“We just put the chairs up there in front of the TV and they bowled,” said LaFrance. The seniors were still able to get some exercise without having to be on their feet.

The Wii is set up in one of the side rooms at the Center where members can go and play anytime.

”There’s always somebody in here playing,” LaFrance said.
