AKWESASNE – Yawentanawen Jan David Herne, known to many as "Weasel", of the Shoskoharó:wane Bear Clan Family, age 66, of Jock Road unexpectedly embarked on his journey to where our Families came from on Friday, December 6, 2024 at his home.

Yawentanawen was born on February 13, 1958, the son of the late Joe Jacobs and Marietta (Jock) Herne. He was a graduate of Salmon River Central School and attended Canton ATC. He married Tsawenhí:non Dawn Delaronde in a traditional longhouse marriage and they were fortunate to have 4 wonderful children.

Yawentanawen worked in security with tribal gaming, starting at Billy's Bingo Hall before going to the Mohawk Bingo Palace, and retiring from the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino. He had a great love for gardening, growing, picking and making traditional medicine, and he cherished the time he was able to spend with his family – especially his grandchildren, both in Akwesasne and Ganienkeh Territory, where he spent the majority of his time.

He is survived by his children, Raiewate Herne (Nikaronhià:'a Jody Sunday), Teiokahráthe Herne, Tehorahkwané:ken Herne, and Takaiénhne Herne (Andrew Antsanen); their mother, Tsawenhí:non; his grandchildren, Lillyan Konwatsenhaién:ni Barnes, Kahnehtawenserá:te Herne, Iakoterennotenhní:hen Jadyn Cook, Roskarawén:te and Shakokahrhen'taónhnhets Seymour, Iakotera'shwí:io and Teya:ohnislastaláte Herne, Ra'kenhráia'ks Belch, and Shakoianahnótha Antsanen; his sister, Joy Oronhió:kon Jock; his very special nieces, Zaagaate Ioráhkote Jock and Enigoonse Ie'nikòn:rare Jock; a very special great niece, Atetsenhtsén:we Robinson-Jock; and many cousins.

Yawentanawen will be resting in the Longhouse in Ganienkeh Territory on Wednesday beginning at 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM for the family, everyone else is welcome after the family has had their time. At 7 PM there will be a small funeral ceremony for the wake and remaining until 11:00 AM Thursday when his traditional funeral ceremony will be held.
