HOGANSBURG- Michael L. "Gramps" Jackson, 72, unexpectedly passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center, with his family by his side.
Michael was born on May 24, 1952, in Malone, son of the late John L. and Anna (LaFrance) Jackson. He was a Salmon River Central School graduate, and on January 22, 1977, he married Mary Ellen Mangan at the Jackson family home in Hogansburg. Mary Ellen predeceased him in 2019.
Mike was a pipe fitter, working at the Carousel Mall in Syracuse for many years, and then as a custodian at the St. Regis Mohawk School. He was a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group and the Akwesasne Senior Citizens.
He loved playing card games and shooting pool, and for many years coached boys/girls and mens/womens softball teams. He loved watching Massena boys varsity basketball teams and never missed a game. He was a big fan of Massena Little League and loved watching all his grandchildren's games whether football, baseball, volleyball or basketball, and everybody knew Gramps.
Mike was the longest living recipient of a kidney in New York State at 32 years. He was blessed with a 36-year working friendship with Dr. Michael Siedman, and Mike's family wishes to thank him and the staff at the Claxton Hepburn Medical Center for their wonderful care.
He is survived by his two daughters Jennifer (Frank) Laughing of Hogansburg; and Joanna Jackson of Massena; six grandchildren Gracie, Frank III, Mylann, Warisaron, Jaxx, Ethen and Beau; and two sisters Marilyn (Mike) Tarbell of Hogansburg and Liz Sunday of Snye; his other favorite nieces Lori, Janelle and Deanne; and several other nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents John and Anna, and his wife Mary Ellen, Mike was also predeceased by his siblings Sarah Mitchell, Mae Bigtree, and John R., Bruce, Elwyn and Emil Jaskson.
Friends may call at Akwesasne Homemakers beginning Wednesday at 2 PM until the Friday 10 AM, when at Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Regis Catholic Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Donations may be made in Michael's memory to the American Kidney Fund.
