A Voice from the Eastern Door
Collection from the Runway of Rezilience, Toronto
With stunning creativity and team work the Akwesasne Museum brings to the community of Akwesasne - Tisha Thompson's Mother Earth Collection. This collection was recently presented at the Runway of Rezilience in Toronto. Thompson held a 'Meet and Greet' on Saturday where community members viewed up close custom fashions made from dried cornhusks, braided sweet grass, and intricate beadwork. Many of Thompson's creations were the result of artistic collaborations with Akwesasronon such as Anna Thompson, Yvette Cook White, Vanessa Martin, Christy Laguador, Tanisha Thompson, Carrie Hill, Kay Lynn Adams, Isabella Thompson, Dee McDonald, Anjelo Johnson and Kelly Back, Tobi Mitchell and Laura Barnes.
Tisha said, "It took me almost a year to gather the sweetgrass, trim it, and then braid it. I wanted the braids to be perfect. For the cornhusk skirt, I had to apply each husk on its own. Now the skirt is changing colors as the corn husks dry out. This has really been an artistic collaborative effort."
The Mother Earth Collection will be on display for 2 weeks only from September 21. The show ends on Saturday, October 5, 2024.
