Salmon River names Francis valedictorian, Mora salutatorian for 2021-22

 

Valedictorian Kiyah Francis wants to go on to study psychology and is an artist.

Salmon River's 2022 valedictorian and salutatorian each managed to get grade point averages above 100 and within 1/10 of a point of each other.

Valedictorian Kiyah Francis plans on attending Dartmouth College to study psychology. She says her guidance counselor, Marci Silver, inspired her to pursue a psychology degree.

Her high school average is 105.42, which is calculated as a weighted average with additional

percentages over 100 for college-level courses. Her advanced placement (AP) college courses include English, economics and U.S. history.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and a member of Impetus through Clarkson University. Impetus is a program to get kids interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields and foster skills through activities like computer programs and research project. Clarkson students and professionals help guide the high schoolers.

Francis does illustrations for Kana:takon School, and also children's illustrations for the Mohawk language program after she was contacted by the school. She also does artwork on her own. Her favorite media is digital art. She also spends a lot of her spare time illustrating for fun.

She is the daughter of Rachel Garrow and granddaughter of Rod and Mabel Garrow.

Salutatorian Madison Mora wants to study biology after high school. She's still deciding between St. Lawrence University and Hartwick College. She said her eighth-grade biology teacher Amy Hollister made her want to get into the field.

Salutatorian Madison Mora is interested in studying biology and is a musician and athlete.

"Her class was really fun and [she] made the class really interesting," Mora said.

She has a grade point average of 105.32. She's taking advanced placement college courses that include U.S. History, English, calculus, biology, economics and pre-calculus.

She is a National Honor Society member, plays the flute in band, runs outdoor track and is a member of NCSTEP and Clarkson Horizons program. NCSTEP stands for North Country Science Technology Engineering Program that is offered through SUNY Potsdam for kids going into STEM careers. Horizons is a similar program through Clarkson University. In her spare time, she likes going for walks and runs outside, reading and doing community service projects.

Her parents are Kelly Mora-Rosas and Peter Mora, and siblings Aleska Mora and Kamdon Mora.
