LEONARD C. GARROW

 

AKWESASNE – Leonard C. Garrow, 91, of St. Regis Road, passed away Saturday afternoon, April 23, 2022 at Canton-Potsdam Hospital after a brief illness.

Leonard was born on October 21, 1930 in Hogansburg, the son of the late Jake and Nancy (Thompson) Garrow and attended schools on reservation. In 1951, he entered the United States Army, proudly serving his country during the Korean Conflict, honorably discharging in 1953. On November 13, 1954, he married Isabel Swamp at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Jacobs, officiating. She predeceased him on July 27, 2019.

Leonard was plumber and carpenter for various construction companies in Akwesasne and the North Country including the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, LBM Lumber, and Mike Thomas Steel. He was a lifelong communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church and a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits, Andrew W. Cook American Legion Post #1479, and the VFW Post #1143, Massena. He always enjoyed doing carpentry projects, making doghouses and windmills, and mowing his lawn. Leonard also cherished the times he was able to visit with family, friends, and his grandchildren and loved the companionship of his cat, Liz Taylor and his dog, Pebbles.


Leonard is survived by children, Carol Garrow of Akwesasne; Daniel and Belva Garrow of Akwesasne, Quebec; a son-in-law, James Hemlock of Akwesasne; his grandchildren, Toni (Trent), Cory (Taylor), Rylee, Matt (Tari), Fabian (Autumn), Megan (Brad); his great grandchildren, Tori, Preston, Allysa, Lance, Mason, Tallon, Sabre, Summer, Leonard, and Ollie; his great-great grandchildren, Hunter, Bradley, Halle, Bryce, Hayven, Logan, Lennix, Jameson, Jorgia, and Echo; his sister, Patricia Garrow White of Hogansburg; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Leonard was predeceased by a daughter, Susan; grandsons, Lawrence "Larry", Kevin, and James Daniel; his brothers, Peter, Alex, and Charles; his sisters, Katherine Garrow Dashnaw, Anna Mae Garrow Besaw, and Mary Garrow.

Arrangements are under the care and guidance of the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena where friends called Wednesday 6-8:00 PM and Thursday 9-10:30 AM when his funeral service was held with Rev. Jerome Pastores, officiating.
