RAYMOND "KIA" SUNDAY

 

AKWESASNE – Raymond "Kia" Sunday, 66, of 1305 River Road, passed away Tuesday evening, March 29, 2022 at Cornwall Community Hospital after a brief illness.

Kia was born on February 7, 1956 in Cornwall, Ontario the son of the late Joseph L. "Jiggy" and Elizabeth "Betty" (LaFrance) Sunday. He first attended Chenail Indian Day School before going to GVSS in Cornwall.

For many years, Kia was a laborer for MCA until suffering a stroke at age 45 causing him to become disabled. Despite his disability, he managed to enjoy his life the best he could. He would often be seen driving around the "Hood" in in golf cart, watching and cheering on the Snye Bums Softball Team, where he was the pitcher prior to his stroke and watching horseshoe tournaments and his chosen sons' various sporting games. He also cherished the memories and time that he was cruising around with his "Wenni."


Kia is survived by his chosen children, River, Wren, Wraven, and Wrani Sunday, Ratsienhaiens, Myan, and Storm Adams, Cody Cash, Camden and SJ; his sisters, Deirdre and Joe Back and Jamie and Dickie Oddo; his brothers, Timmy and Charlene, Steve and Anna, Patrick, William and Wendy, Cory and Sammi, and Charlie; his brother-in-law, Alex McDonald; many nieces and nephews; and his godsons, Ratsienhaiens Adams, Braiden Sunday, and Harlon Edwards.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Laura C. "Moolay" McDonald and Tricia Sunday; his brothers, Thomas and Carl "Bonzo" Sunday; a chosen son, Tiio Adams; and a nephew, Cody Sunday.

Friends called at his home, 1305 River Road, TsiSnaihne. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, April 2nd at 11:00 AM at the St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Hogansburg/Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department.
