Akwesasne Residents Escapes Injury After Fiery Crash
Morristown. Morristown Fire Department officials reported a truck towing a race car went off the road, took down a telephone pole, and crashed through the building and into the cooler. Officials on scene said the truck exploded.
Akwesasne resident Shane S. Mitchell, 34, was traveling east on State Rt. 37 when his vehicle exited the roadway off the north shoulder. Troopers say it appears Mitchell fell asleep at the wheel. Tickets were issued but details weren't immediately available as the incident remains under investigation.
Officials said the truck exploded inside of the building immediately catching the store on fire. According to Morristown Fire Department officials, emergency crews responded to the scene of 3667 State Route 37 just after 9pm on Sunday night. The building also houses a Tim Horton's and Subway.
As reported, everyone inside was evacuated and no one was injured. Morristown Fire Chief Jay Moore said crews knocked the fire out quickly, but the building was a total loss.
"So, it's a convenience store that also houses a Tim Hortons and a Subway inside it," Moore said. "There were a few occupants here when it happened. Everybody is out safe. All the occupants of the vehicle are out and accounted for."
Only one passenger was injured in the crash, with Garin T. Thompson, 14, being transported to Claxton Hepburn Medical Center for a facial laceration and released soon after.
