Varsity sports: Massena volleyball defeats M-W; SRC girls soccer blanks N-N

 


Massena and Salmon River recently earned shutout wins in volleyball and girls and boys soccer against teams from around the North Country. Here is a recap of recent local matches:

• Monday, Oct. 4, volleyball, Massena 3, Madrid-Waddington 0 -- The Raiders swept three sets by scores of 25-6, 25-18 and 25-15. Katelyn Benham sparked the Massena offense with 17 service points, five aces and 10 assists. Faith Halladay tallied 10 service points and six aces. Ella Murtagh fashioned six service points and three kills. Felicity Engstrom recorded five service points and four kills. Makenna Cameron came through with six service points and a solo kill. Payton Benson scored five service points. Keely Bova contributed three kills and three service points. Sydney Cardinal finished with a pair of kills.

• Monday, Oct. 4, girls soccer, Salmon River 4, Norwood-Norfolk 0 -- Ryanne LaFrance scored the only goal necessary on a play set up by McKenna Laughing with 21:30 to go in the first half. An insurance marker came off the foot of Joryan Adams, assisted by Leyla Snyder, with 3:03 left in the first half. In the second half, Kaylynn Leaf scored from LaFrance with 26:15 left in the second half. Snyder scored unassisted with 2:31 left in the game. SRC goalkeeper Mia Leroux turned aside eight shots. N-N netminder Caramia Carista made 14 saves.


• Monday, Oct. 4, girls soccer, Massena 3, Canton 0 -- Elizabeth Rogers scored two of the Raider goals, with the third coming off the foot of Anna Kuball. Canton netminder Brianna Rogers made seven saves.

• Monday, Oct. 4, volleyball, Potsdam 3, Salmon River 1 – Salmon River won the first set 25-22, with Potsdam taking the next three 27-25, 26-24 and 25-23.


• Friday, Oct. 1, boys soccer, Salmon River 6, Gouverneur 0 -- Kade Cook scored once and assisted twice in the shutout win. Chase Lewis booted in one and assisted another goal.

• Friday, Oct. 1, boys soccer, Massena 3, Potsdam 0 -- Luke Greco scored once and assisted twice, while Thomas Eggleston and Aidan Aldous each connected for solo markers.

• Friday, Oct. 1, volleyball, Potsdam 3, Massena 2 -- Massena took the first and fourth sets with respective scores of 25-15 and 25-22. Potsdam won sets two, three and five all by scores of 25-17. For Massena, Faith Halladay tallied 17 service points, five aces, three kills and two assists. Katelyn Benham finished the evening with 13 service points, two aces, 25 assists and one kill. Ella Murtagh pitched in eight service points, two aces and nine kills. Felicity Engstrom came through with six service points, nine kills and three blocks. Sydney Cardinal fashioned three service points and four kills. Makenna Cameron scored three service points, an ace and two kills. Keely Bova contributed four service points and two kills.

• Thursday, Sept. 30, volleyball, Salmon River 3, Ogdensburg 2 – The ‘Rocks won the first, third and fifth sets by respective scores of 25-20, 25-21 and 25-23. OFA won sets two and four, 25-23 and 25-18. For Salmon River, Joely Swamp had 10 aces and 15 assists. Shelby Jock pitched in two aces and nine kills. Wynter Jock finished the evening with two aces, three kills, six blocks and four assists.

• Wednesday, Sept. 29, girls soccer, Massena 4, Potsdam 0 – Libby Rogers scored a pair of goals en route to the shutout victory, with the other two coming from Jeanelle Burke and Aliyah Bingham. Sabella Cromie in the Raiders net fashioned four saves.

• Wednesday, Sept. 29, boys soccer, Ogdensburg 1, Massena 0 -- The only goal of the game came from Holden Woods in the Raiders home game. Colin Patterson made five saves in the Massena net. Ryan Warchol, OFA goalie, tallied eight saves.
