Kahentase Terrance – Recipient of the Arnold Sauther Scholarship

 

Kahentase next to her paintings, pottery and beadwork. Several works of art by Kahentase can be viewed along with the Thrive Project participants at Downtown Artist Cellar, 410 East Main St. in Malone until the end of the month.

Kahentase Terrance, a senior student at Salmon River is the of the 2021 Arnold Sauther Scholarship Recipient for 2021. The scholarship was presented by Foothills Art Society at the Thrive Project Opening Reception on June 11, 2021 in Malone, NY.

Kahentase will continue her education at the College of Visual and Performing Art, Syracuse University in the Fall.

Nancy Child, stated, "She is one of the most creative and talented students that have passed through the Salmon River Art Program. She has taken all drawing and painting courses, Haudenosaunee Arts and is currently taking Native Studies."

In her teens she showcased her dedication as she took part in Ohero:kon, rites of passage ceremony. In her sketchbook assignments and other school assignments she reflected upon some of her experiences which showed her deep connection with life and her art, her incredibly stylistic art making and the type of works she will be making in her future education and career.

Kahentase works part-time apprenticing with Niio Perkins, an award-winning artist known for her beadwork and fashion. She aspires to follow in her mentor's footsteps and become a successful artist entrepreneur.

Kahentase stated, "My community inspires me. We have so many talented artist here in Akwesasne and I love how they love their work and what they do"

Child said, "Ambition and talent are admirable and will bring her far in her future education endeavors."

Kylee Disotelle and Katsitsionni Fox said in their recommendation letter to the Foothills Art Society, "Kahentase's dedication to her education, her traditions and her art, make her the perfect candidate to receive the Arnold Sauther Scholarship."
