Raiders, Shamrocks girls hockey teams down Oswego, Canton

With the 2019-20 girls hockey season under way, Massena and Salmon River picked up recent wins against the Oswego Buccaneers and Canton Golden Bears.

Massena beat Oswego 4-2 at Massena Arena on Saturday, Dec. 7. Massena scored twice in the opening stanza and once in the middle frame. In the third period, Massena scored their fourth goal while Oswego fashioned two.

Two days earlier, the Shamrocks trounced Canton 7-1 on the Bears' home ice. Brycelan Sunday and Kayla Cunningham each scored twice for SRC. Rylee Garrow, Julia Oakes and Hannah Johnson also found the back of the Canton net. Carli Cartier stood tall in the Shamrocks net with 25 saves. Ava Murphy scored Canton's goal. Ashley Wiggins made 17 saves, and was relieved later in the game by Sarah Rodee, who turned aside 13 scoring attempts.

Salmon River's girls contingent added their third win of the week against Oswego on Friday, Dec. 6 by a 3-0 final score. Rylee Garrow scored the only necessary goal, assisted by Karli St. Ann and Brycelan Sunday, in the middle stanza. Hannah Johnson also scored in the second after getting the puck from Myranda Collette. St. Ann scored the second insurance goal late in the third period on a play set up by Sunday. Cartier turned aside 12 shots. Ashley Finch made 24 saves for Oswego.


The same night, Massena lost 6-1 on their home ice to Skaneateles. Kylie Letham scored the sole Raiders goal. Rebecca Cain and Ioanna Christou both scored twice for the competition.

Two nights earlier, Massena lost a high-scoring 7-4 game to the Sandstoners at Pine Street Arena in Potsdam. Ella Oakes scored twice for Massena. Margaret Wilmshurst and Hannah Chilton each netted solo goals. Kennedy Emerson scored four times for Potsdam. Karley Green, Sophie Compeau and Anna Nelson picked up the other three markers.
