Kawehno:ke Fall Festival hosts vendors, games and Tri-District Elders Quilt Show
By Mahlon Smoke
As Halloween fast approaches, it's the perfect time to celebrate the outdoor fall season with friends, families, and of course with donuts and apple cider. The Kawehno:ke Fall Fest had all of that and more. Outside the Kawehno:ke Recreation Center was set up a small festival for all the children to play games, buy treats, and run through a maze. The Akwesasne Freedom School were also selling pumpkins that were painted by the members and the children, all of which were happy to show off and sell their designs. Later in the day a hayride would begin for anyone wanting to enjoy a ride in the fresh fall air.
Inside the Recreation Center sat vendors of all different crafts. From knitting to beading and so much more. Being raffled off was a Blue Snow Mobile for all who wanted to enter the raffle. Concessions were available with hot dogs, hamburgers and more, all of which were cooked by the volunteers the Kawehno:ke Recreation Committee.
In the very back was the Tri-District Elders Quilt Show. The Quilt Show was a center of pride for many Akwesasronon who've worked hard on intricately detailed and beautifully designed quilts. Students from the Akwesasne Freedom School also had the opportunity to showcase their own handmade quilts. The AFS 4th grade students picked out the colors and fabrics they liked, arranged it the way they wanted and then AFS teachers helped them assemble the quilt. They were displayed for everyone to see the talented students and their designs. Each quilt made by the Freedom School will be donated to the Ottawa Children's Hospital for many young patients in need of warm blankets.
Along with the first-time quilters was award winning quilts from various women throughout Akwesasne.
